- (d. 1396)Mystic and Devotional Writer.Little is known of Hilton’s life. He was a member of the Augustinian Order based in Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire. His best-known work, the Scala Perfectionis, describes and compares the active ascetic ‘life of faith’ with the contemplative, mystical ‘life of feeling’. His work shows the influence of Augustine of hippo, Gregory the great, Richard rolle and the author of the Cloud of Unknowing. It was first printed in 1494 and was widely read.H.L.
